What affects EV charger installation cost in Canberra

Two EV charger installs can look identical and cost very different amounts. It mostly comes down to what's between your switchboard and your car. We don't publish fixed prices because they'd be wrong for most homes. Here's what drives the cost, and how to get an accurate quote quickly.

Common reasons people call

  • Online prices that don't match the quote you got
  • Not sure what's included in an install
  • Want to budget before buying a charger

What the job covers

  • A written quote itemising the circuit, protection and any extra work
  • Clear notes on whether switchboard work is needed and why
  • No obligation to proceed

The biggest cost factors

  • Cable run: the further the parking spot is from the switchboard, and the harder the route, the more cable and labour it takes.
  • Switchboard: a board with spare room and capacity is simple, while an older or full board may need upgrading first.
  • Supply: three-phase chargers need three-phase power, which some sites don't have.
  • Location: outdoor installs, trenching or posts add materials and time.
  • The charger itself: whether you supply it, and which model.

How to get an accurate quote fast

Send photos of your switchboard, the meter box and where you park. Please photograph the outside of your switchboard. You may open its normal hinged access door if safe, but never remove a screwed cover or expose wiring. Tell us roughly how far apart they are. With that, Mick can often quote without a visit, or tell you a visit is needed.

What affects the price

Every job is quoted on what's actually involved. The main things that change it:

  • Distance and route from switchboard to charger
  • Switchboard condition, room and capacity
  • Single or three-phase supply
  • Indoor or outdoor installation
  • Charger supplied by you or advised by us

What to expect

  1. 1Send a quote request with your suburb, the car and charger (if you have one), and a photo of your switchboard and where you park.
  2. 2Mick checks your switchboard, supply and cable route — from photos where that's enough, or on a site visit.
  3. 3You get a written quote that spells out the circuit, protection and any switchboard work needed.
  4. 4The charger is installed on its own circuit, tested, set up and you're shown how it works.

Questions about this job

Why don't you list a price?
Because the cable run and switchboard vary so much between homes that a single number would mislead you. Photos let us give you a real figure.
